FIRST's vision is to "transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated
and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders." (Dean Kamen, Founder)
MECO fulfills this vision by bringing STEM to life through hands-on, interactive experiences for K-12 students at schools, parks, and community events and "learning forward" by attending industry events and touring local engineering firms.
For the past two years, we have run the local Maker Faire paper rocket booth, where attendees decorate, assemble, and launch paper rockets using a bike-pump pneumatic system with a countdown, engaging participants in physics and engineering concepts.
At our STEM-themed summer camp, we explore a different branch of science each week, using activities such as invisible ink to demonstrate chemistry, lemon batteries to illustrate electricity, and tiny motors and batteries attached to paper cups to showcase the excitement of robotics.
